REPRODUCING FIGURATIVE COMPARISONS IN THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION OF SARAH HAYWOOD'S NOVEL «THE CACTUS»

Abstract

This paper examines the challenges and strategies involved in translating figurative comparisons from English into Ukrainian using Sarah Haywood’s novel «The Cactus» as a case study. The primary objective is to identify how the emotional and stylistic nuances of the original text are preserved and to analyze the effectiveness of various translation methods for figurative comparisons. The study reveals that accurate translation requires a nuanced approach that balances maintaining the original meaning with adapting to the cultural and linguistic specifics of the target language. The findings demonstrate that some strategies enable the preservation of the emotional impact and stylistic uniqueness of the original text, while others may compromise these aspects. The paper includes specific examples of translation to illustrate the effectiveness of different approaches. Future research could extend this study by comparing translation strategies across different literary genres and languages, as well as exploring the influence of cultural contexts on translation efficacy.
